Rebecca MacKinnon is an American journalist, speech activist, and expert on Internet censorship. She is co-founder of Global Voices Online, an international network of bloggers and citizen journalists reporting on events across the world. Fluent in Mandarin, MacKinnon worked for CNN in northeast Asia for over a decade, serving as Beijing bureau chief and correspondent from 1998 to 2001. MacKinnon serves on the board of directors of the Committee to Protect Journalists, Global Network Initiative, and Global Voices Online. She is the author of “Consent of the Networked: The Worldwide Struggle for Internet Freedom.” MacKinnon is the director of Ranking Digital Rights, a program funded by the New America Foundation that works to promote freedom of expression and privacy on the Internet by creating global standards and incentives for companies to respect and protect users’ rights.
