Saving Democracy from Disinformation

As democratic nations become increasingly worried about the roles of disinformation and propaganda play in their elections, the question of accountability looms large for governments and citizens alike. Journalist and Pulitzer Prize-winning author Anne Applebaum argues that the internet and social media have broken mainstream media’s monopoly on information. More voices have been added to national conversations, yet the basic facts of those conversations are increasingly biased and unchecked. The result is a steady undermining of democratic institutions and hyper-partisanship. Anne calls on civic activists to develop methods of countering disinformation and to penetrate the echo chambers that now drive national debates.
