Aminatou Haidar has spent her life fighting for the rights of the people of Western Sahara. But her call for peace and justice has been met with periodic imprisonment, torture, violent intimidation, and near constant threats. Despite all that she’s endured, Haidar’s response has been peaceful. Often referred to as “Sahara’s Gandhi,” she took the stage at the Oslo Freedom Forum to discuss the history of Western Sahara, the violence the residents have been subjected to for decades, and the years she’s spent dedicated to nonviolent resistance.
