Journalist and politician Svitlana Zalishchuk fought on the front lines of Ukraine’s democratic revolution in 2013. She describes how she and her fellow Ukranians united against a corrupt government, took to the streets, and demanded free and fair elections. Voted into parliament the following year, Zalishchuk became the first politician to publicly support LGBTQ rights. Her journey shows how civil society can successfully bring about change when it asserts its right to free speech and refuses to remain complacent.
