The Historical Truth Behind Mao’s China

Chinese-born British author Jung Chang speaks about the power of literature and the importance of truth in historical biography. She describes how the Chinese regime manipulated the historical narrative to disguise Mao Zedong—one of history’s most prolific murderers—as a compassionate and successful ruler. Chang countered this narrative by researching and writing an account of the crimes of Mao’s government, including the deaths of more than 70 million Chinese citizens. She stresses the importance of publishing first hand accounts of human rights abuses to expose the lies of government propaganda narratives.
