Burundian rights activist Pierre Claver Mbonimpa describes his work as an advocate of prisoners’ rights in his country. Mbonimpa recounts how he was arbitrarily imprisoned for two years on false accusations. During his imprisonment, Mbonimpa endured brutal conditions, an experience that motivated him to found the organization Burundian Association for the Protection of Human Rights and Detained Persons, an organization that visits prisons to document rights violations. Mbonimpa proudly announces that instances of torture in Burundi have been reduced by 90% thanks to his organization’s efforts.
