Wai Wai Nu was imprisoned for seven years just because her father was part of the political opposition in Burma. More than that, Wai Wai and her family are Rohingya – a Muslim population that faces systematic discrimination from the Burmese government. Despite the challenges, Wai Wai has dedicated her life to promoting democracy, empowering women, and educating young people on differences in religious and cultural practices in the hope that the next generation will grow up in a more tolerant and free Burma.
