My Journey from North Korea to America

Grace Jo
Asia-Pacific and South Asia
|

From 1990 to 1998, 2.5 million North Koreans died of starvation as a result of the Kim regime’s economic policies. Grace Jo was just a child when her father, desperately trying to feed his family, crossed the border from North Korea to China to find food. He was tortured to death upon his return. Detailing her family’s escape to China and eventually the United States, Grace shares the hardships suffered by North Korean defectors and calls on democratic societies to help refugees adjust to a life of freedom, rather than fear.
