Condemned to Venezuela’s Prisons

Humberto Prado

|

Venezuelan prison reformer Humberto Prado reveals the horrific violence that occurs in prisons in Venezuela—violence that he calls “an undeclared civil war.” Prado States that, rather than treating prisoners humanely and recognizing their basic human dignity, the Venezuelan prison system is the government’s “social cleansing” project. The Venezuelan government refuses to acknowledge the human rights abuses occurring in its prisons and offers only limited images of a few successful initiatives to the outside world. Prado laments that the international community has not responded to calls to raise awareness about these violations.
