Fatma Karume

Fatma Karume is a prominent Tanzanian lawyer and co-founder of the Center for Strategic Litigation, where she challenges the regime’s repressive and unconstitutional laws. She joined us on the 2023 Oslo Freedom Forum stage to discuss Tanzania’s “bulldozer” president and the importance of the rule of law in fighting against dictatorships.

Tanzanian lawyer and human rights advocate

Fatma Karume is a prominent Tanzanian lawyer and advocate of the rule of law and human rights. Her vocal dissent and courageous defense of democracy during Tanzania’s authoritarian slide under the late President John Magufuli led to her office being bombed in 2017 and her disbarment in 2020, which was overturned by the High Court in 2021.
