In her speech at the 2015 Oslo Freedom Forum, Hinostroza details the crackdown on independent media in Ecuador under the rule of President Rafael Correa. More than 20 media companies have been forcibly shuttered for their critical views of his government, and Hinostroza lost her job for reporting on a corrupt loan deal involving Correa’s cousin.

Janet Hinostroza is an Ecuadorian television reporter and host. Her reports have covered a range of topics, including extrajudicial killings and scandals within the Ecuadorian police force. In 2012, she was forced to take a leave of absence from her morning news show after receiving anonymous threats in retaliation for filing a report that uncovered irregularities on a loan issued by a state-owned bank and tied to President Rafael Correa’s cousin. Hinostroza was the recipient of the 2013 Committee to Protect Journalists International Press Freedom Award.
