Milli

Azerbaijani writer and founder of independent news agency, Meydan TV

Emin Milli is an Azerbaijani writer and activist. Milli served as director of the Friedrich Ebert Foundation and also advised the Council of Europe on more than 40 political prisoner cases in Azerbaijan. In 2009, Milli helped a fellow activist create a video poking fun at the Azerbaijani government. Later that year, he was assaulted and severely beaten by two men. When he went to file a complaint about the assault, the police instead detained Milli and charged him with hooliganism. After serving 16 months, he was conditionally released, in part due to strong international pressure on the government of Azerbaijan. Milli now lives in exile in Germany.
