Memory Mbewe

Malawi anti-child marriage advocate

Memory Mbewe is a children’s rights advocate, paving the way to end early and forced marriage in her home country of Malawi. As a youth leader and ambassador, Mbewe’s efforts have gained the attention of Malawi’s first lady, Gertrude Mutharika, who has pushed to end child marriage. In 2015, the Malawi government passed a bill outlawing child marriage and raising the minimum age of consent to 18. Mbewe is the program leader and youth ambassador for Plan International, an independent development and humanitarian organization. Mbewe spreads her message as a presenter at Timveni, a youth radio and television station in Malawi. She is striving to end all forced marriages by 2030, as part of the Global Goals for Sustainable Development.
