Omar Mohammed

Iraqi historian, citizen journalist, and founder of Mosul Eye

Omar Mohammed is an Iraqi historian who began the anonymous blog Mosul Eye in the wake of ISIS’ 2014 takeover of Mosul to document atrocities committed by the terrorist group. Despite the constant threat to his life, Mohammed updated the blog diligently for over a year and was able to save many lives through his journalism and geolocation of trapped families. In 2017, Mohammed launched his project “Let It There Be a Book, Rising from the Ashes,” an initiative that led to the preservation of over 32,000 books and manuscripts. In 2018, Mohammed joined the Maurice R. Greenberg World Fellows Program at the Jackson School of Global Affairs at Yale University. Mohammed now lives in exile in Europe.
