Oksana Romaniuk is director of the Institute of Mass Information (IMI), one of Ukraine’s leading media NGOs, and a supervisory board member of the National Public Broadcasting Company of Ukraine. She is a recognized expert in media law, freedom of expression, communications, and disinformation. Since 2013, she has led IMI’s work to defend freedom of speech, strengthen independent journalism, and promote media literacy in Ukraine. Under her leadership, IMI has developed nationwide monitoring and advocacy initiatives which document violations against journalists and media outlets and track investigations into these cases. Since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion, IMI has also systematically documented Russia’s crimes against journalists and media, with its evidence contributing to international advocacy and accountability efforts.
Romaniuk has helped expand IMI into a nationwide support infrastructure for journalists working in wartime conditions. The organization has provided safety and technical equipment to media workers and built a network of 15 regional media hubs that offer journalists workspace, training, internet access, and emergency support.
Romaniuk is the author and editor of multiple guidebooks on journalistic standards, ethics, and safety. Her work has been recognized with the Human Rights Tulip, the Internews Journalism Achievement Award, the Kurt Schork Memorial Fund Award, and the Monismanien Prize.
