Emmanuel Jal has overcome huge personal struggles, from his start as a child soldier in the war-torn region of Southern Sudan in the early 1980s to becoming a successful and acclaimed recording artist and peace ambassador now living in Toronto, Canada. He was awarded the 2018 Václav Havel International Prize for Creative Dissent.
