Abdullah Ibhais

2022 FIFA World Cup whistleblower

Abdullah Ibhais is a communications professional who previously served as a media manager with Qatar’s organizing committee for the 2022 FIFA World Cup. In 2019, he was fired, and later arrested on trumped-up charges in retaliation for refusing to spin a protest by thousands of migrant workers involved in the construction of the Al-Bayt Stadium and the Education City Stadium over unpaid wages as unconnected to the World Cup. Coerced into signing a false confession, he was sentenced to five years in prison in April 2021. While in jail, he endured solitary confinement, deprivation of visits, sleep and food, and waged hunger strikes to protest his detention, which UN human rights experts qualified as arbitrary. Ibhais was released in March 2025 after more than 1,250 days of imprisonment in Qatar.
