Serbian nonviolent strategist Srdja Popovic offers a historical overview of armed resistance versus nonviolent struggle against repressive regimes. Although wars and violence receive more attention in history books and the media, nonviolent struggle is more successful and leads to stronger democracies. Whereas the 20th century centered on the arms race,Popovic says that the 21st century must focus on the race for education, as the tool through which people will change the world and oppose brutal regimes.
