Mobilizing with Art

Russian street and performance artist Pyotr Verzilov shares the work of two of the most controversial art groups in Russia: the street art group Voina and the feminist punk collective Pussy Riot. Verzilov shows how these groups have been challenging the status quo in Russia by producing bold and creative political statements. Verzilov concludes his talk by showing Pussy Riot’s most prominent performance, the protest staged in Moscow’s Cathedral of Christ the Savior, and describes how several band members were later arrested and charged with hooliganism. Verzilov applauds the international campaign launched to convince Putin to release the members, but reminds the audience that there is still much to be be done for human rights in Russia.
