West Papuan independence leader and former political prisoner Benny Wenda asserts that colonialism still exists in the 21st century, in the form of the Indonesian occupation of his homeland. He tells the story of witnessing the Indonesian army’s brutalinvasion of West Papua when he was a child, and of how he was arrested, jailed, and tortured for leading peaceful demonstrations against Indonesian rule, before escaping to the U.K. Wenda vows that he will continue to speak out about the Indonesian government’s crimes, despite an international warrant issued for his arrest. He calls for the support of the international community and shares his hope that one day he will return home to a free West Papua.
