Defeating Dictators

Ghanaian economist George Ayittey’s energy and hope are apparent as he lauds the “cheetah generation” of Africa, which he believes will take back the continent from the hands of dictators, one nation at a time. He cautions, however, that street protests and brave actions are not enough. It is not enough to simply oust a dictator. Ayittey demands penetration reforms that address every aspect of society and leave no cronies in place, which will ensure that future elections are fair. Only when this internal reform—sparked by intellectual freedom—is combined with a systematic overhaul of all areas of government can real freedom and democracy be achieved.
