Pakistani human rights advocate Asma Jahangir declares that activists must be as strategic as the dictators they oppose; passion and integrity are not enough in combating authoritarian regimes. She describes the difficulties she has faced throughout her career, both in her advocacy efforts and her law practice. Jahangir acknowledges that activism puts individuals at great personal risk, and that the transition to democracy is a very fragile process. She warns against populism, arguing that Islamists will “use the ladder of democracy to get to the top and then saw it off.” But, Jahangir firmly believes that what is needed is more democracy, not less.
