Asma Jahangir was one of Pakistan’s foremost human rights lawyers, demonstrating unwavering courage in advocating for the most marginalized individuals within the country, often at significant personal risk. Jahangir was one of the leaders of the Women’s Action Forum (WAF). She also set up AGHS Legal Aid in 1986, the first free legal aid center in Pakistan. In 1987, she co-founded the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, a non-governmental organization dedicated to promoting the human rights of oppressed ethnic and religious minorities, women, children, and political dissidents. Throughout her advocacy career, she was subjected to numerous death threats, house arrests, and imprisonments. Jahangir was the recipient of many international and national awards, including the posthumous award of the Nishan-e-Imtiaz Pakistan, the country’s highest civilian honor. She died in 2018
