Sakdiyah Ma’ruf, an Indonesian stand-up comedian, fearlessly uses humor as a tool to advocate for individual rights and challenge Islamic fundamentalism. Inspired by United States-based comedians, Ma’ruf boldly addresses pressing issues facing Indonesia, including rising extremism and violence. Despite pressure from television producers to censor her jokes, Ma’ruf remains resolute in her commitment to free expression and women’s rights, believing that comedy serves as a mirror to expose cultural hypocrisy. By speaking out against growing fundamentalism, Ma’ruf continues to push boundaries and promote dialogue on critical social issues in Indonesia. In recognition of her courageous activism, Ma’ruf was awarded the Václav Havel International Prize for Creative Dissent in 2015, further cementing her role as a prominent voice for change and freedom of expression.
