Executive director of the Albert Einstein Institution

Jamila Raqib is the executive director of the Albert Einstein Institution, an organization focused on advancing freedom and democracy through nonviolent action around the world. At the age of five, Raqib and her family fled Soviet oppression in Afghanistan. She joined the Albert Einstein Institution in 2002 and works closely with its founder, Gene Sharp, the world’s leading scholar on strategic nonviolent struggle. Together, they published “Self-Liberation: A Guide to Strategic Planning for Action to End Dictatorship or Other Oppression,” which has been used throughout the world as a practical guide for nonviolent resistance. Her work takes her around the world, consulting individuals and groups seeking to achieve goals such as opposing dictatorship, combating corruption, attaining political rights, economic justice, environmental protection, and women’s empowerment.
