Elena Kostyuchenko

Elena Kostyuchenko is a Russian LGBT rights activist and journalist for Novaya Gazeta. Well known for her dissidence in a country where challenging the status quo is becoming increasingly dangerous, Kostyuchenko was fined 20,000 rubles for protesting at the Moscow Pride Parade in May 2013. After the Russian government passed its repressive anti-gay propaganda law later that year, Kostyuchenko threatened to out any closeted Russian politicians that voted for the bill. She has received acclaim for her coverage of protests against the construction of a controversial 12-lane highway through the Khimki Forest, as well as her work exposing Russian fighters in the breakaway “republics” of Donestk and Luhansk in Eastern Ukraine.
