Rémy Amahirwa

Son of imprisoned Rwandan opposition leader Victoire Ingabire Umuhoza

Rémy Amahirwa is the eldest son of Victoire Ingabire Umuhoza, a Rwandan opposition leader currently detained for her political beliefs. He lives in Sweden, where he works and studies, and is a husband and father of three children. Since his mother’s arrest, Rémy has taken on the role of advocating for her release, engaging with policymakers, human rights organizations, and international institutions. Speaking as a son rather than a politician, he brings a personal perspective to the human cost of repression, highlighting how restrictions on freedom of thought, conscience, and expression affect not only individuals, but entire families.
