Philip Obaji

Award-winning investigative journalist and human rights educator

Philip Obaji has documented both human rights abuses by Russian paramilitaries and the trafficking of refugees in West and Central Africa. In 2023, while investigating Russian operations in CAR following the death of Yevgeny Prigozhin, Obaji was held hostage for hours by rebels. He was later arrested and detained overnight by CAR forces and Russian paramilitaries on the border with Cameroon. For his efforts, Obaji received the 2022 Jaime Brunet International Human Rights Prize and the 2023 One World Media International Journalist of the Year award.
