Marina Ovsyannikova

Russian journaist and anti-war advocate

Marina Ovsyannikova, a former editor at a Russian state television channel, openly protested the war in Ukraine in March 2022. On live federal news, she presented a poster condemning Russian aggression. This act of civic courage brought international attention to the problem of censorship and the lack of freedom of speech in Russia, and Ovsyannikova herself became a symbol of protest against authoritarianism. After her protest, Ovsyannikova faced criminal prosecution and was forced to leave the country, continuing her activist work abroad. She was awarded the 2022 Václav Havel International Prize for Creative Dissent.
