Luis Almagro

Uruguayan lawyer, diplomat, and secretary general of the Organization of American States (OAS)

Luis Almagro is a Uruguayan lawyer, diplomat, and the 10th Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS). Almagro has centered his position as secretary general around a campaign of “more rights for more people” and the reduction of inequality in the Western hemisphere. A career diplomat, Almagro was foreign minister of Uruguay from 2010 to 2015 and defined several emblematic initiatives for the nation, from receiving former prisoners from Guantanamo to welcoming Syrian families who had been victims of the country’s conflict. During his 20-year career at the Uruguayan foreign ministry, Almagro represented his country in senior diplomatic posts in Iran, Germany, and at UNESCO; he also served as ambassador to China from 2007 to 2010.
