Somalian activist and educator

Fartuun Adan is a Somali activist, educator, and executive director of the Elman Peace and Human Rights Centre, Somalia’s leading organization on peacebuilding, development, women’s empowerment, and the rehabilitation of child soldiers. Following the assassination of her husband in 1996, she fled to Canada but returned in 2007 to continue their work. The centre offers counseling and medical services, entrepreneurial training, and relocation to safe havens, among other resources. Adan has been awarded various prizes, such as the US Department of State International Women of Courage Award and the Gleitsman International Activist Award from Harvard University.
