Dr. Matthew Gillett is a senior lecturer (associate professor) at the University of Essex and the vice chair rapporteur of the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention. He worked for over 15 years in the Hague, including as a trial lawyer at the International Criminal Court and the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia. He also served as a human rights officer for the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan and as a senior legal officer for the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons. He was a member of the New Zealand delegation to the 2010 Kampala Conference on the Crime of Aggression. He has published extensively on international law and environmental protection, such as his award-winning monograph, Prosecuting Environmental Harm before the International Criminal Court (Columbia University Press, 2022).
