Congolese gynecologist and founder of Panzi Hospital

Dr. Denis Mukwege is a Congolese gynecologist and the founder and medical director of Panzi Hospital, a treatment center for women who have suffered sexual violence during war. Founded in 1999, Panzi Hospital has served more than 70,000 survivors of sexual violence by providing medical care as well as legal and psychosocial services for its patients. Dr. Mukwege has become the world’s leading expert on medical treatment for gang rape victims. In 2012, he spoke before the United Nations to condemn impunity for mass rape in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Dr. Mukwege was awarded the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought in 2014 and has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize three times.
