Dhondup Wanchen

Tibetan filmmaker and former prisoner of conscience

Dhondup Wangchen, a self-taught filmmaker, captured the reality of life in Tibet under Communist rule through his courageous documentary “Leaving Fear Behind,” filmed secretly amid the hype of the Beijing Olympics. Following its release, Wangchen was detained as part of the Tibetan Uprising of 2008. Despite facing imprisonment and harsh conditions for his activism, Wangchen’s unwavering commitment to human rights and freedom of expression has inspired global solidarity. He was honored with the 2014 Václav Havel International Prize for Creative Dissent and remains a steadfast advocate for Tibetan freedom, reminding the world that the struggle for human rights in Tibet persists, even when the world’s attention wanes.
