Ladan Boroumand is an Iranian historian and the co-founder and research director of the Abdorrahman Boroumand Foundation for the Promotion of Human Rights and Democracy in Iran, created in memory of their father, a pro-democracy activist and lawyer assassinated by agents of the Iranian government. Boroumand has also founded Omid, an online project that details the rights abuses of the Iranian dictatorship and memorializes its victims. Boroumand has a master’s in political sociology and a Ph.D. in French history and is the author of “La Guerre des Principes,” a study of the relationship between human rights, sovereignty, and the ideological roots of terror during the French Revolution. Boroumand and her sister, Roya, were the recipients of the 2009 Lech Walesa Prize. Boroumand has done work at the National Endowment for Democracy as a visiting fellow and at the International Forum for Democratic Studies as a research council member. She currently serves on the Steering Committee of the World Movement for Democracy.
