Using Media to Fight Homophobia in Uganda

Kasha Jacqueline, founder of Uganda’s first media platform for the LGBTI community, Kuchu Times, speaks on the violence and legal attacks faced by homosexuals in her country and Africa more broadly. In Uganda, the punishment for being a homosexual includes “corrective” rape and the death penalty. Jacqueline describes the constant efforts by Ugandan lawmakers to punish the LGBTI community and connects these legal injustices to the impunity of the state and the power of Ugandan media, which frequently exposes homosexuals and calls for violence against them. She offers two solutions: holding governments accountable before international courts of law, and reclaiming Ugandan media to amplify the voices of the LGBTI community.
