The Rise of the New Dictators

Will Dobson, journalist and author of “The Dictator’s Learning Curve,” discusses the innovative ways modern authoritarian regimes have learned to hold onto power. Dictators once used gulags to suppress opposition, but now they must find subtler ways to deal with dissent. Dobson argues that smart phones and satellites have made it difficult for authoritarian regimes to maintain control of information, so they are adopting more subtle control tactics such as jailing dissidents for tax code violations and vague national security violations. However, as Dobson notes, people have continued to prove they’re willing to fight for their freedoms.
