The Price of Freedom for North Korean Women

Hyeonseo Lee
Asia-Pacific and South Asia

In North Korea, children learn the names of the Kim family before they learn those of their own parents. Hyeonseo Lee grew up in this oppressive system, watching her first public execution at the age of four. After a harrowing escape through China and Southeast Asia, Hyeonseo has dedicated her efforts to helping North Korean’s forgotten victims: women who have escaped the North but live as sex slaves and trafficked brides in China. Through the efforts of Lee’s NGO, these women have been able to start new lives in South Korea.
