Saudi blogger Ahmed al-Omran describes the powerful role that the internet plays in the closed society of Saudi Arabia. While the Saudi government is able to control traditional forms of media, it has been unable to completely exert power over the internet, despite attempts to block bloggers and force them to register with the government. Al-Omran describes numerous laws that the government has attempted to enact, all of which have been thwarted by tech-savvy youth in the kingdom. Al-Omran belives the internet is the tool that will give young Saudis the power to assert their rights and fight for freedom.
