Refugees and Human Rights

U.N. Deputy High Commissioner for Refugees Craig Johnstone discusses his role and responsibility in addressing the needs of the world’s 32 million refugees. He recounts the challenges he and his team face in prioritizing limited resources among refugees, interacting with authoritarian governments, and organizing aid in the most effective manner. He cautions that aid goals must be pursued in a principled and pragmatic way to create lasting change. Although they face many struggles and hardships, Johnstone has observed that refugees do not abandon the dream of freedom—and neither should we.
