American physician and civil rights advocate Zuhdi Jasser discusses the American Islamic Forum for Democracy (AIFD), an organization that he founded in the wake of the September 11 terrorist attacks. Jasser explains that the organization’s mission is to provide an “authentic Muslim voice advocating for the preservation of the founding principles of the U.S. constitution.” Jasser states that the Muslim world is currently trapped in a binary choice between Arab secular dictatorship and militant political Islam. However, he argues that there is a third option: universal liberty. Jasser maintains that Islam must be modernized, a process that is only possible in an environment where people are completely free to debate.
