Jamaican-American author Thomas Glave discloses that he views himself primarily as a writer, not an activist, so he chooses to share a story—rather than a more conventional speech—that conveys all the antagonism and violence that gays in Jamaica face. His story is a clarion call for the international community to focus attention on the abuse of gays in the Caribbean. Glave also offers his story as a prayer, a hope that out of the darkness of today a brighter future can emerge for homosexuals in his country—a future of peace, acceptance, and respect.
