Vanessa Berhe

Vanessa Berhe is a free speech activist who began protesting Eritrea’s human rights abuses when she was only 16 years old. After her uncle, photojournalist Seyoum Tsehaye, was imprisoned in September 2001, Berhe began campaigning for his release at her high school and later expanded the campaign to secondary schools and universities around the world. In 2013, Berhe founded One Day Seyoum, a human rights organization where she campaigns for her uncle’s release and raises awareness about the crackdown on democratic ideals in Eritrea. Berhe is currently a law student at the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London and serves as a One Young World Ambassador while continuing to advocate for her uncle’s release.
