Sharofiddin Gadoev

Sharofiddin Gadoev is a Tajik opposition leader, exiled from his country in 2012. Gadoev was part of the opposition party National Alliance, and in 2012, co-founded the opposition movement Group 24, operating mainly abroad due to domestic repression. Through both movements, Gadoev has worked to oppose the corrupt and nepotistic rule of Tajikistan’s president, Emomali Rahmon, who has been in power since 1992. Rahmon and the Tajik government banned the opposition party and Group 24 for alleged extremism, forcing their operations out of the country. In February 2019, Gadoev was forcibly taken from Moscow to Tajikistan by government security officials. Global human rights organizations reported that he had been beaten and detained and made to participate in choreographed videos, stating that he had returned to Tajikistan voluntarily. Gadoev was released in early March, and is currently in exile abroad.
