Michael Anti

Chinese journalist and political blogger

Jing Zhao, known by his pen name, Michael Anti, is an influential Chinese journalist and blogger. Once an ardent supporter of the Chinese Communist Party (CPP), Anti’s exposure to the Internet led him to become a passionate advocate of freedom of the press. In 2005, his well-known blog on MSN Spaces was deleted by Microsoft under pressure from the Chinese government. In 2011, Anti again became the subject of controversy when his Facebook profile was suspended because of its strict policy against pseudonyms, a policy that Anti argues is harmful to rights activists working online in authoritarian regimes. He is a recipient of the Wolfson Press Fellowship at Cambridge University and a Nieman Fellowship at Harvard University.
