Kakwenza Rukirabashaija is an exiled Ugandan lawyer and novelist who has written social protest literature against the Ugandan dictatorship. Rukirabashaija is the author of The Greedy Barbarian, a novel that satirizes the rise of high-level corruption in a fictional country; Banana Republic: Where Writing is Treasonous, an account of the torture he suffered while in detention in 2020; and The Savage Avenger, a narration of his arrest, torture, and judicial harassment in 2021 after mocking Uganda’s First Son, an army general. In 2021, he received the Pinter International Writer of Courage Award, and in 2022, he was shortlisted for the Václav Havel Library Foundation’s Disturbing Peace Award, which recognizes distinguished courageous writers who have suffered unjust persecution. He is currently exiled in Germany, writing more social protest literature as a scholar of PEN-Zentrum Germany.
