
Deirdre Nansen McCloskey, emerita professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago, has taught economics, history, literature, writing, philosophy, and communications for 50 years, including 12 years at the University of Chicago, 19 at University of Iowa, and visiting appointments worldwide. A well-known economist, historian, and rhetorician, McCloskey has written 17 books and around 400 scholarly pieces on topics ranging from technical economics and statistical theory to transgender advocacy and the ethics of bourgeois virtues. Her latest work, Bourgeois Equality: How Ideas, Not Capital or Institutions, Enriched the World (2016), has been well received. She has written for, among others, Reason magazine, the Financial Times, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, the Times Higher Education Supplement (London), and The New Republic. McCloskey received the Julian L. Simon Memorial Award from the Competitive Enterprise Institute in 2013 for her work examining factors in history led to advancement in human achievement and prosperity.
