Umida Akhmedova is an Uzbek photographer and documentarian known for her active social activism and critical perspective on social norms and human rights in Uzbekistan. Her works, often addressing gender inequality and traditional lifestyles, have caused controversy and even persecution by the regime. Akhmedova’s activism, expressed through her photographs and documentaries, has played a significant role in the discussion and understanding of human rights and freedom of expression in the region. She was awarded the 2016 Václav Havel International Prize for Creative Dissent.
