Gulchera Hoja

Uyghur journalist

Gulchehra Hoja is a Uyghur American broadcaster. In 2001, she quit her career at Chinese state media out of shame after learning about the freedoms that Uyghur exiles enjoyed outside of China. She emigrated to the United States and began reporting on the repression of the Uyghurs for Radio Free Asia (RFA). In 2017, Hoja was accused by the Chinese regime of being a terrorist and placed on a most-wanted list. Twenty-four of her relatives were arrested by regime officials the subsequent year and remain missing in so-called Uyghur “re-education camps.”Hoja is a recipient of the Magnitsky Human Rights Award in 2019 and the Courage in Journalism Award from the International Women’s Media Foundation in 2020.
