Art Residency in Occupation

Ukrainian underground art society

Art Residency in Occupation, founded by curator Yuliia Manukian in occupied Kherson, Ukraine, brought together six artists who, in an underground studio, created works reflecting the devastation of war. This initiative provided a safe haven for artists, giving them the opportunity to talk about the war through art. For their courage and creative documentation of the horrors of war, the team was awarded the 2023 Václav Havel International Prize for Creative Dissent, highlighting their contribution to documenting the aftermath of the Russian invasion through drawings, paintings, photography, diaries, and videos.
